Word count: 709 | There was an ad in the newspaper. “Hello trainers! In order to raise awareness of our new bike shop, Vicious Cycle, we’re hosting a game of capture the flag for pokemon trainers of all skills! Battles, glory, and even free rewards await you! Meet us in the morning at our opening location, a block down from the pokemon center.” A date and address was listed below. Luce, enjoying his morning coffee, nearly missed the ad among the much more colorful ones proclaiming 15% off everything! that surrounded it. Normally, Luce wouldn’t have thought much of it, if not for that one little promise of free rewards. Capture the flag? That couldn’t be that hard. Best of all, the event was supposed to be today. Day planned. The ad had said the shop was a block away from the pokemon center where he had rented a room. Luce had even written down the address; even still, it took him twenty minutes of thurow searching to find the place. Which, in this case, was a single, brown, wooden door with a sign, containing the shop’s name, the size of a normal shop’s “open” sign hanging from a screw nailed into it. The entrance was wedged between two much more bold stores. On the left was a shop with open displays of the newest pokeballs, and on the right was a fishing gear store. Wondering what had possessed the owners of this shop to buy such an unassuming location, Luce turned the old brass handle into the shop. A chime sounded above him. The interior of the shop reflected its exterior - squished laterally, bikes were hung on the walls and from the tall second-floor ceiling, rather than being placed on a rack like most similar shops. A wooden staircase wound up to a glorified balcony that managed to stretch halfway across the shop before ending in a railing. About half a dozen other people were already in the shop, mostly making quiet conversation or looking at the bikes. A lady with short brown hair and a collared shirt waved Luce over to the counter. “Are you here for capture the flag?” Luce nodded. The lady handed him a square of paper. “So, once we get started we’ll split you all into two teams; red and blue.” The lady went on. “We’ve already put your flags up. Four blocks north and another four south are two buildings. Both are three stories high and have rooftop gardens, where you’ll find your respective flags. If my coworker’s gotten the up yet.” She said coldly. “Simply take the other team’s flag and bring it back to your own base. But here’s the twist:” She held up a finger dramatically, but had an expression that said she’d given this talk several times already. “You can challenge anyone of the other team. If all their pokemon are knocked out, they have to return to the pokemon center immediately, and, if they have the flag, they have to turn it over to the victor. “There’s a few other rules, like you can’t decline a challenge and every trainer is only allowed two pokemon. Also, if you’re challenged by two trainers, the team of two will each send out one pokemon and you would send out both of yours. Trainers can join in on battles at any time, up to two versus two. It’s up to you if you see a teammate battling, if you should aid them or rush on ahead. Lastly, if the flag is taken but recovered, it can be returned to the team’s base.” The lady paused, making sure he had absorbed all that. “The rules are on that paper there, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. We’re going to start in about thirty minutes, or when my co worker decides to come back. Whichever comes later. Feel free to browse our fine selection while you wait! Oh, and please sign here with your name.” Luce signed and returned the paper to the lady that said it wasn’t the bike shop’s fault if he fell and broke his leg. With nothing left to do but look at the exorbitantly priced bikes, Luce went off in search of the oddest colored bike. |
Note: The rewards are a lie. This is just a group thread for fun. | |
