NAME: Ryusuke Ugumi
Appearance: Standing in at a fair 5' 7", a good portion of Ryusuke's weight is actually a result of the prosthetic arm and leg he's worn since the age of ten. Of fair complexion with light blond hair and an unusual golden eye color to match, courtesy of his father's Blackthorn heritage, Ryusuke's clothing can vary anywhere from the typical t shirt, jeans and sneakers while in a city to the heavier duty boots, pants, jacket and tank top he tends to wear when durability is required of his clothing. After leaving home, however, Ryusuke has made it a habit to wear the crimson coat that his mother had in her youth, both as a reminder to why he left home as well as motivation to measure up to her legacy. Personality:
History: Born to two trainers, Ryusuke was incredibly inquisitive, showing an inborn intelligence from an early age that was quickly noticed by both teachers and fellow students alike. While normally not particularly attention drawing on its own it quickly made him the target of ostracism when combined with his hair and eye color, along with the fact that he didn't seem to partake in any of what most children his age considered socially acceptable activities. By the time he had reached the age of 7 it had come to outright physical confrontation, and what had been something of an enthusiastic but inquisitive nature quickly turned into one of defiance and self reliance, with Ryusuke finally joining a local dojo at his mother’s insistence in the hopes of learning a means of self defense. Highly encouraged by his natural ability in the arts, Ryusuke excelled with his studies at the dojo, quickly becoming one of the top students due to his quick speed, the ability to improvise quickly when needed and above all, just plain being too stubborn to back down. As he became less and less of a social outcast thanks in part to both having found a group that accepted him as well as having gained the ability to fend off the few physical attacks that came his way, Ryusuke was actually happy for a short time, although this would be a relatively short lived period. A year later he and his father would be involved in a car accident that both crippled his father and cost Ryusuke two of his limbs, completely severing his right arm from the shoulder down and crushing his left leg from the knee down. Bleeding heavily and unable to locate his arm for possible reattachment in time, the medics were forced to amputate the remains of his lower left leg to stop the bleeding, with Ryusuke still nearly dying despite numerous blood transfusions. Unconscious and unresponsive for nearly two days after the collision, Ryusuke found himself without the ability to move on his own and his father in a similar situation as a result of being paralyzed from the waist down, and for months afterwards he was drawn into a deep state of depression, with only the rehabilitation process saving him from complete despair. By the time he had reached the age of ten Ryusuke had managed to pull himself loose from his depression, focusing on what good had come from it - for starters, both he and his father were alive when they had no right to be, and in large part due to several advancements in prosthetics he could hypothetically regain full functionality in day to day life despite the loss of his limbs. Realizing that life was simply what you made of it and that everyone's time was limited in one way or another, be it by age, chance or otherwise, Ryusuke decided he'd simply make the most he could of the time he had, viewing it as a second chance. Returning to normal classes nearly 10 months after the accident (in large part due to the physical rehabilitation and adjusting to his new prosthetics), Ryusuke delved back into life with a drive rarely seen in people his age, climbing to stand near the top of the student rankings, position he managed to maintain despite (or due to) his rather stubborn attitude in addition to having to leave the dojo he’d been training at. With Ryusuke old enough to help around the house and not require constant overwatch from his parents, his mother returned to her life as a trainer, leaving their home in Lilycove to tour the Hoenn region yet again in an effort to help pay the family bills, although his father, also handicapped but without prosthetics to compensate, was forced to remain home with their son. As the months would pass by the pair would receive regular postcards and calls from his mother, either via Pokemon Center or through her PokeNav in the field, and after another year passed she would leave the island region for Kanto and Johto, and after another year she would travel to Sinnoh for several months. About halfway into her typical regional tour, however, the Ugumi household would receive a postcard explaining that she had cut that tour short to travel back to her home region to visit her family - while unusual it was no cause for immediate alarm, and passed without much worry until several more months had passed without additional updates from his mother. As yet another two months passed by and worry began to set in Taichi attempted several times to contact his wife through her PokeNav from their end, failing to connect to the device each time before bringing the matter to the Ranger Union in the hopes that they could locate the missing trainer, only to find that there was no Union in the [Unknown] region where she had gone missing - without anyone else to turn to, Taichi began considering contacting [Unknown]'s regional law enforcement after the fourth month had passed. Ryusuke, during all of this, had started to get his own ideas - having long been raised on stories of his parents' travels as trainers he'd initially considered choosing that lifestyle before his prosthetic surgery and rehabilitation had put an indefinite hold on those plans, and after beginning to grow disgusted with the perceived incompetence of the authorities he brought the idea of going looking for his mother himself to his father. Taichi, needless to say, refused, unwilling to allow his son to go into a situation that had potentially proved to be too much for even a veteran trainer. Despite the rejection of the idea, however, Ryusuke was not so easily dissuaded, and it only took another month before he decided to act with or without his father's consent, sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night along with the two Pokemon he had received from his parents as childhood companions along with several of his father's belongings from his glory days as a trainer - several Pokeballs, the beat up old briefcase he'd used to carry things, his father's PokeNav and the coat his mother had worn at his age, far too small for her adult self and long since packed away until that moment. Already having planned ahead of time and bought a ticket for a ferry to the [Unknown] region ahead of time, Ryusuke was far, far away from Hoenn before anyone realized he had left. Several months would pass after Ryusuke left Hoenn, during which he would grow both as a person and as a trainer - while initially off to a rocky start, the same independent spirit that he'd shown as a child would soon assert itself as he began to grow more familiar with what it meant to train a team. While he had first started with only Treecko who'd been at his side since early childhood and his father's Charmander, Ryusuke was soon joined by one of his mother's first Pokemon as well as adding several new additions over time, and as he toured the region in search of her he continued to improve in skill. Roughly five months into his journey, though, things would abruptly change as he received a message from his mother, warning him to stay away and if possible, leave the region - while loath to do so and torn with indecision for days, Ryusuke eventually took heed of her warning, leaving the region behind. Having become far too accustomed to the lifestyle and used to the freedom it offered, however, Ryusuke did not leave for Hoenn, but rather boarded a ship for Orre, the last place anyone would likely look for him. What would be intended as the start of a regional tour, however, would be abruptly cut short by two events - first, the acquaintance of a new trainer who had gotten into a mess well over her head, and second, the sudden abandonment of his mother's Metagross, acquired during Ryusuke's travels in her home region. Faced with the options of either following through with his plans or chasing down the rogue Pokemon Ryusuke chose the latter, ending up back in Hoenn where the Steel type had returned to the family home before continuing further west to Lavaridge. Improbably enough, reuniting with its original trainer in the process, and resulting in a less than comfortable encounter for Ryusuke. While a few days would be spent in Lavaridge, during which the blonde would settle for tagging along with the rookie trainer he had met in Orre for lack of anything better to do, the two would move on soon enough to leave the region yet again. Eventually, due to the newer trainer seeking a change in career paths, Ryusuke would find himself employed by a Professor in Unova for several months as something of a gofer, carrying out odd jobs for room and board, and it would be on one such trip that Treecko would finally evolve along with Charmeleon, likewise acquiring a Gastly in the process. Things would otherwise continue on in a relatively monotone fashion for several months until the trainer he had met in Gateon Port would finally break to go her own way, with Ryusuke likewise doing the same. With three years having gone by since his original departure from home, he would once again return to Hoenn, this time with the intention of patching things up with his father and potentially returning to something of a normal life. On returning to Lilycove, however, Ryusuke would find the family home effectively abandoned - his sister having left the house as a trainer herself half a year before, his mother still off who knew where and Ryusuke's father having reached the end of his patience with his wife, returning to Blackthorn to live with his extended family. While not at all what Ryusuke had hoped for nor expected, the trainer would remain in the city for a time regardless, picking up a job in Hoenn's Safari Zone to support himself for the next several months. While a relatively quiet period in the trainer's life, moreso than he'd had the pleasure of for a number of years since leaving home, the knowledge and experiences acquired during his travels ensured that Ryusuke quickly became one of the Zone's more capable employees. Capable enough, ironically, that he soon found himself assigned with effectively the exact same tasks that he had while working under the Professor in Unova, namely business trips fetching things outside of Hoenn or otherwise providing the Safari Zone with some degree of presence in meetings with other companies. Unfortunately, though, Ryusuke's tendency to get into trouble without even trying to would manage to work its way into even that profession. After roughly half a year of working for the Hoenn Safari Zone Ryusuke would be sent to Kalos to represent them in a Breeder's Convention taking place in Lumiose City, more specifically the Richissime Hotel. With recent events having long since been tied up by the League and the event overseen by numerous Interpol agents at the request of the hotel staff, sending a single trainer able to converse with the breeders in question had seemed to be a reasonable action, with Ryusuke himself acquiring a Turtwig egg as a bonus. What hadn't been anticipated, however, was the idea that another team would attempt to make a name for themselves so early after Flare's defeat and disbanding - while new, the group was incredibly well organized, orchestrating a rapid takeover of the hotel with the intent of stealing the wide array of Pokemon and valuables gathered within the building. While Ryusuke and several others within his section of the building had failed to avoid capture, a distraction provided by another captive gave the trainer the opportunity to reach his own Pokemon, and by extension create an opening to free another trainer in the process. Borrowing his mother's signature battling style, albeit far less effectively, Ryusuke would then engage the five other team members present in a battle with the assistance of the other trainer. While it would initially begin on a high note, pushing the team members back to the wall with surprisingly little effort, the disturbance would attract the attention of a former Flare member hired on as a mercenary. With the inclusion of the new individual Ryusuke would find himself trapped in a battle where the scales had tipped against him, resulting in a slowly losing fight. While it was never played out to its conclusion, with Interpol managing to retake the building and intervene before any of Ryusuke's Pokemon were knocked unconscious, the mercenary he had been fighting both managed to destroy the blonde's prosthetic arm in the battle, as well as make off with the Charizardite Y that he had obtained months previous from a friend in Hoenn. Despite being otherwise none the worse for wear save for a relatively easy to replace arm covered by the family's medical insurance (and that had been long overdue for an upgrade due to advances in technology), the fact that he would've lost the fight did not escape Ryusuke's notice. His mother, who had managed to attain the title of Champion in the last Indigo League tournament held, would've managed what he had and more with likely only two or three Pokemon where Ryusuke had needed all six, and while there was no love lost between them after what had happened in the woman's home region, the fact that he was still so far behind her bothered him for reasons he wouldn't have cared about before. When it just came to battling alone, Ryusuke's pride was fairly nonexistent - he'd readily throw a fight before risking serious harm to his Pokemon, but Richissime had been different. Had he lost there, not only would his Pokemon have been taken from him, but the well being of nearly everyone else present would have been at stake. "Bothered" by the implications and revelations, frankly, was an understatement, and rather than waiting at the hospital for a replacement limb to arrive after being measured Ryusuke would effectively disappear. He would quit his job for the Safari Zone, only remaining in Lumiose long enough to conclude their business there as promised, and leave Kalos for another region entirely, solely with the intent to train not only his team but to improve his own level of ability as well. Dropping off the face of the earth much as he had when the trainer had initially fled from home, Ryusuke would remain out of touch with the world at large for nearly four months before finally returning to society. Making his first visit the hospital within the regional port to have the replacement limb finally shipped to and fitted on him, the trainer would then hop yet another liner for a region he hadn't yet visited, with the sole intent to not only further test his abilities but continue to improve as well. Leaving most of his Pokemon in a friend's care as a deliberate handicap - intending to retrieve them once he was certain he'd finally mastered the skills he had - Ryusuke would depart for the Rakuen region, his first two starter Pokemon in tow.
