THE LOST SHRINE GYM
The mountain town seemed weird from the start, but as you’ve gone farther in, you’ve started to feel… like you’re being watched. Even with a full moon in the sky, deep shadows hide what lays behind the broken windows and in the uneven alleys of the abandoned settlement. The night is unseasonably cold, and the air hangs with an eery silence. You’ve been following the old wooden signs, lit by rusty iron lanterns at their base, since the first dim light greeted you from the trail. All have worn down by weather so only by touching the knotted planks can you feel the indents left by once-painted arrows and text, reading “To Gym”.
Something rustled behind you. You spin around, catching only fleeting flicker of blue light. Now it really feels like you’re being watched. Following the old dirt path - a little faster now - you come upon a building larger than just about any other in town. Above the wooden double door, illuminated by a lantern hanging out of the second floor window, a ripped cloth banner reading “Lost Shrine Gym” has been tied to posts stuck into the wall of the oak building.
A paper in a plastic sleeve has been hung on a nail in the door.
“Welcome to the gym, glad you made it in one piece! (If you haven’t made it in one piece there’s a first aid kit inside the door to the left.)
I, your humble gym leader, am currently out fulfilling my life rather than sitting around waiting for challengers. But rest assured I will readily accept your challenge! Use the phone upstairs to give me a call and I’ll be there as soon as possible. I’m the first contact. Until then, feel free to stay in the gym. There’s rooms upstairs which you’ll find considerably less haunted than the rest of the town.
Sleep Well!
- Rip, Gym Leader”
A grand staircase (and thankfully nothing else) greets you through the main doorway. The set of doors on either side of the steps lead into a large room, once used as a meeting hall and on special occasions a ball room, but now fresh paint marks it as a battle arena. The king post roof reaches to the second floor; the hallway of the floor above rims the room below, and has been refurbished with new railings and armchairs. The kitchen is through the first floor door on the right, and the washrooms on the left. The half dozen rooms on the second floor have been repurposed as guest rooms, only the most northwestern of which has been locked. The narrow, northernmost door opens to the bell tower’s staircase; an old spiral set that creaks on every other step. Directly up the main stairs is a video phone, charging station, and a table, on which you’ll find keys to the rooms and a pile of laminated pamphlets titled “Please Read”.
“Rules, tips, and courtesies:” the pamphlet reads,
“• You may battle any wild pokemon you see, but please do not aggravate more than what you can handle. You’re helping me rebuild if you knock down a wall.
• Don’t attempt to steal a gym badge because I’m not here.
• You’re welcome to any of the supplies in the kitchen. Pokemon healing supplies are in the bottom cupboards.
• This is the only place nearby with running water, so if the liquid coming out of the tap seems questionable, boil it.
• Keep the windows closed at night (yes I know it smells like mildew).
• If another window breaks there’s planks and nails in the kitchen.
• Don’t answer knocks on your door at night, even if they sound like someone you know.
• The dusknoir you might see about is mine, don’t mind him.
• Keep at least one pokemon out at all times.
• Don’t put on tests of bravery. Those stopped being funny after someone got locked in the old pokemart by a banette.
• If a little ghost girl in a white dress beckons you, don’t follow her (she doesn’t go anywhere interesting anyway).
• Salt helps ward off ghosts. You’ll find bags of salt by every room, lay a line of it across the doorway.
• If stuff starts flying off the walls or levitating, if you (a) have pokemon food; throw it, (b) don’t have food; get down on the ground and cover your head until things settle down.
• You can ring the bell in the gym’s tower to help calm the ghosts.
• Please do not spray repel in the gym. It doesn’t help with anything. You’re not being smart.
• Be carefull out in town unless you’re confident of your strength. The gym should be safe enough but the town is very hunted. If something goes really wrong, call for Dusknoir.
• Call me if there’s an emergency. I recommend you put my number in your pokedex.
Remember: fear attracts the ghosts.
by picking up this pamphlet you agree that I’m not responsible for anything that happens to you and Dusknoir can follow you around if you seem like the dangerous type.”
Jodie “Rip” is the standing gym leader of Lost Shrine. With a greater need to wander than the ghosts that haunt her place, she’s more often out of the gym than in. In the year and a half she’s been a gym leader, Rip has become infamous enough for the night challengers spend in her haunted gym “waiting” for her that some have questioned if it’s part of earning the badge. Yes, it is.
If challengers are still there and among the living in the morning they may challenge the leader without any other trials. Battles are 1v1. Challengers may use as many pokemon as they like and Rip will use pokemon according to the challenger’s badge count. Before the battle begins, the challenger and Rip will agree on the number of turns allowed for the battle. The battle will conclude if either side is unable to battle or the number of turns has expired. Rip will then decide if the challenger is worthy of the badge.
The challenge Rip’s gym poses is dependent on the badges of the trainer. Those with four or less badges will find the Lost Shrine gym to provide a challenge of typing, while those with more than four will find Rip to challenge them with status effects and strategic maneuvers.
The Ethos Badge is awarded to successful challengers. The team you’ll face consists of Shedinja, Sableye, Froslass, Golurk, Aegislash, and Dusknoir. If you stick around after the battle she might share one of her famous ghost stories!
