The Hall Leader motivated him to stick around the bay a bit longer. Nyx was a tough but she was even tougher and he did not need a Pokémon battle or contest to figure that out. Someday, Nyx would have to face her, show her that he was the best. He would have to show all the hall leaders that he was the best of the best. Sure, he hasn't competed since he was thirteen in the Kanto region but he still had it and so did Jolee and Bleu. Looking at them now, he could tell they felt the same way he felt. Like Nyx, they were determined to prove to Melia-- and other hall leaders -- that they are or soon will be the Top Coordinators of the Rakuen region. They proved this to the Kanto region and they would be more than happy to prove this to the Rakuen region.
But Nyx new that Jolee and Bleu could not carry them to the top. Not by themselves. He would need to expand his team, train new Pokémon who would specialize in different categories. Nyx only wanted to work with water Pokémon though and from what he's heard, the path he will be soon taking to his first contest was not all that welcoming to Water types. If he needed to catch a few, this was the place to do it.
"Bleu, Jolee." He called as he sat on the shores, arms wrapped around his little Togepi. "I need you two to search the bay, around it, in it- I don't care. Try to find a Pokémon and pick a friendly fight or something with it. So we can capture it, obtain it and add it to our little family." He paused for a moment to reach into his bag and pull out a pink puffin, handing it to the togepi. "Remember, I want water Pokémon. First type, secondary type, I honestly don't care.".
Both Bleu and Jolee gave Nyx a nod assuring him that they understood, which made him smile. "You guys are the best. Go ahead, find a possible friend."
Bleu dived into the water looking for Pokémon and Jolee walked a long the perimeter of the bay with her nose down, sniffing the ground. Nyx kept himself alert, waiting for either of the two to call him when they found something. He also kept the pocket that held his pokeballs open. He was ready to catch a Pokémon.
As the trainer's pokemon split in search of wild quarry amongst the waves, the trainer himself went for a dive. Beneath the waves there was a plethora of water types available but finding them could prove difficult when many of them could breathe underwater and you could not. In the clear blue water it was easy to spot the Shellder's purple shell. It sat amidst a rocky outcropping well below the waves. The trainer couldn't reach it but a water pokemon should have no trouble engaging the creature in battle if it so choose. It's white eyes and red tongue peered out from between the two halves of it's purple shell. It had grown accustomed to watching people and pokemon swim over it and it took little interest in the diving trainer. The Shellder had situated itself in a deeper part of the bay, it had very little to worry about so it stared lazily from a distance.
As the sun's rays filtered through the crystal clear waters they illuminated the Pokemon, glinting off scrapes and scars on it's shell. It was an older looking Shellder, and judging by the lack of pokemon in it's immediate vicinity it was likely that the elder Shellder didn't like to be bothered.
He hoped his Pokémon were alright. Neither one made a sound to let him know they have encountered a Pokémon and he was starting to believe they never will run into one. It was very quiet. There wasn't a sound. The bay seemed to relax a bit as well, showing no sign of active Pokémon. Were they sleep? Did something he was not aware of happen? So many questions yet no one in particular to answer. Nyx sat around, waiting and waiting. Nothing happened. He was bored out of his mind now, he had nothing to do except build sand castles with his little Togepi and even she was tired of building sand castles. They had to do something else and since Nyx had no ideas, the togepi took it upon herself to do something.
In a blink of an eye, she was gone. Running in the direction of the bay. "Togebaby, wait!" Nyx leaped to his feet and ran after her, hollering and screaming. It was too late though, the togepi had been sucked in and calmy carried away from shore. Nyx jumped in after the togepi, who was somehow staying a float. The coordinator swam as fast as he could but he still wasn't able to keep reach the togepi. The togepi drifted farther and farther out. Until finally, it was stuck in one place. When he was finally able to reach her, the togepi began to sink. He dived in after it and couldn't help but notice all the different Pokémon that was there. He almost ran into a few margikarp during his dive and togepi bounced off the back of a goldeen and into Nyx's arms.
Out of all the water Pokémon, only one stood out. A shellder. His wide eyes and large tongue made him really stick out. For just a second, Nyx thought about catching him. He knew a lot about a shellder and it was it's evolution that interested him. A cloyster. They were both tough and clever. If he had a cloyster on his team, surely he would be unstoppable. But the scratches on the shellder's shell most likely meant he's been in a few fights. He looked territorial too. This shellder was not for him, but a hardcore trainer who puts up a pretty good fight. It was clear to Nyx that he would not be able to train this Pokémon. The shellder was most likely stuck in his ways-- there was no changing him.
A rock was near by and Nyx was quick to swim to it and climb on it, sitting on the large rock to rest for a bit.
The Shellder would have proved to be a fearsome foe and a valuable ally but one can never blame more discerning trainers. After all they knew what they wanted best. A trainer doesn't need a strong pokemon, they need a strong team. The Shellder for one certainly appreciated being left alone, but not every pokemon in the bay was quite so anti-social though. Togepi, what a troublesome pokemon. They were always wandering off, getting in trouble. You couldn't argue with results though. As the trainer completed his rescue of the Pokemon and pulled himself up onto a rock another decided to join them. A wild Corsola crawled up onto the rock next to them, enjoying some time out of the salt water with little regard to the others currently sharing its usual sunning spot. It offered them only a cursory glance before staring down at it's reflection in the waves as they lapped against the rocky outcropping. For a wild pokemon this one seemed rather relaxed and carefree, one of the perks of living in a peaceful crystal clear bay.
A corsola! Nyx didn't need a pokédex to tell him about this Pokémon. His older sister was once obsessed with corsola. She would tell his family and him different facts about the Pokémon at least twice a day. Corsola is a water and rock type, they grow better in clean water, corsola usually stay in groups. He picked his brain for different facts he knew about the corsola. It was a little odd to see that this particular one was not with a group of others like itself but he wasn't complaining. The corsola seemed a little more comfortable with humans, sitting only a few feet away from Nyx and his togepi. That was a good thing- while he wasn't looking for easy Pokémon to train (or difficult ones), a Pokémon that was comfortable around a human being would be a lot better for a coordinator like himself.
He briefly glanced at the corsola, taking in the beauty of the pink Pokémon and thinking of ways to approach it. Should he slowly move toward it or quickly? Should he claim the Pokémon as his next catch aloud or simply wait until he defeated it? More questions, more questions. One thing was for sure, he would not be able to catch it right away. He had no pokeballs or a trained Pokémon to use in battle. He would need to befriend the Pokémon somehow. Well, now he just HAD to approach the Pokémon. But how?
Once again, togepi had taken it upon herself to do something, squirming out her trainer's arms and heading in the direction of the corsola. "Togepi!" It chirped happily at the corsola. The togepi than took it upon itself to sit beside the corsola and begin babbling. "Togepi!" Nyx called cheerfully, slowly approaching the Corsola. "Sorry for bothering you. Togepi is just really friendly. So am I!" He began scratching the back of his head. "Hey Corsola, why are you sitting here all by yourself?"
The Corsola turned to face the Togepi as it approached. Being a Corsola it was used to the company of others so the strange pokemon approaching it wasn't really a cause for alarm. The water pokemon greeted the Togepi as it approached in the two began babbling to each other like two babies who were put into the same crib. It clearly enjoyed the company but seemed more interested in the Togepi than the person sitting just behind it. When questioned the Corsola looked up at Nyx and let out a few unintelligible cries before returning continuing to babble happily with the Togepi. This conversation continued until both were more or less talking at the same time in a jumbled unintelligible mess of cries and their own names. After a brief period of nonsensical conversation the Corsola turned back to face the water and started it its reflection, gesturing towards it. The pokemon was clearly fascinated by its somewhat distorted reflection in the waves as it reached out to touch it with it's front leg causing the water to ripple out in all directions. It let out an excited cry and sat down again, watching as its reflection came back into focus after the ripples subsided.
The attention the corsola gave Nyx was very brief. Still, he was happy. The corsola acknowledge him and that's all he really asked for. She was more interested in his little togepi. The two chatted and Nyx could tell how much togepi liked her. He wondered what the two talked about. Togepi was only a couple hours old, she hasn't picked up much. Is the corsola a baby too? Nyx sat by himself thinking about that. She seemed very young.
The two had a nice talk but the corsola ended their conversation to look at herself. She smiled at her reflection, she seemed very please with herself. What a vain corsola. He thought to himself. So was Jolee. The furfrou could stare at her reflection all day long. Especially after being trimmed. Trimmed. Nyx thought about it for a moment. His face quickly lit up, he knew how he would catch the corsola
"Hey corsola!" Nyx called out. "I think you're a cutie but... you know what will make you even cuter?" He paused, waiting for her to give him her attention. "Bows! I'm a coordinator, you see and sometimes I have to make my Pokémon look good. So I put bows on them! I was thinking maybe you could try some on? But you have to followe, okay?"
Lacking a neck the Corsola had to turn its entire body to look at the trainer as he spoke. It stood there awkwardly for a moment. Blinking a few times as if confused before suddenly letting out an excited cry and jumping up and down a few times. The Corsola seemed to understand his meaning for a moment but then it simply rolled off the rock into the water. About half a minute passed before it re-emerged on the other side of the rock with slimy bits of seaweed hanging from it's mouth. The Corsola placed one on the Togepi's head and threw the other bits up into the air, catching them on it's spikes. It looked up trying to see the seaweed on it's head but couldn't quite get a good look at it. Turning back to the water it admired its reflection for a moment before shaking itself intensely and sending the seaweed flying in the trainers direction. It seemed to understand the concept of dressing up but didn't want to leave it's rock. the Corsola was quite content with it's current situation and couldn't imagine a life better than the one it had in the bay.
The bits of seaweed that landed on the Togepi's head made her exchange looks with her trainer. Neither of the two understood why the corsola did such a thing. It wasn't until she looked at the water, he understood. The seaweed was some sort of accessory to her. Perhaps a resemblance of a bow? He wasn't sure. "You can dress up all you want with me. If you were my Pokémon, we'd play dress up all the time little one! You could wear all the seaweed, bows, accessories... whatever! Like I said, I'm a coordinator. What we do is dress our Pokémon up and present them to a crowd of people who will admire your- I mean, the Pokémon's looks." Nyx crawled toward his togepi, slowly taking off bits of seaweed. As he did this, he began to rethink his plan of obtaining the corsola. "Corsola, I'm not going to lie or pretend anymore. I want you on my team. I want to train you and use you in contest because you have potential." Nyx scooped up his togepi and moved in closer. He saw the look the corsola had when he first mentioned taking her back to shore. She liked the bay a lot. "If you do not want to join my team... that is also fine. I just wanted you to know that if you were my Pokémon... you and I would win so many ribbons."
The Corsola blinked a few times as the seaweed was removed from the Togepi. This particular person talked an awful lot, too much for the young Corsola's attention span. It lingered for a moment longer as the coordinator continued to talk but its gaze wandered past him. As much as the Corsola would enjoy seeing the world and getting adorned with awards it did not share the same vision. It would take much more than words and promises of grandeur to convince this Corsola to leave its home. Behind the trainer another Corsola popped out of the water and called out. Any notions the Corsola on the rock may have been entertaining about leaving home were lost as its kin called out from the waves. The Corsola hopped off the rock and into the water, casting one more look at the two whose company it had shared. A moment later it vanished beneath the waves and returned home, perhaps it would find its calling someday but it would not be this one. For now it would return to the bay. A bay that was brimming with potential contestants should one get lucky enough.
He watched the corsola. She was thinking about it, he just knew it! The calling of another corsola made her decision very easy. She looked back at him for a second before leaping into the bay. She didn't come back after that. Nyx's arms grew tighter around the togepi as he looked at the bay at his reflection. He was sad, his entire face expression showed how depressed he had now become. He really wanted that corsola to join his team. But if she's happier here, there's nothing he can really do about it. "Let's get to shore." He said to no one in particular before jumping off the rock. He swam back to shore where Jolee had been waiting for him. She noticed her trainer's heartbroken look and when he sat down beside their things, she comfort him by rubbing her head against his arm. He smile. "So you didn't find anything? That's fine, we'll find something sooner or later."
Safely back ashore the sound of children playing and waves lapping against the warm sand was almost peaceful. Nothing much of interest was going on and the relative silence continued for quite some time. On the waters edge a lone fisherman cast his line into the calm waters. Sitting in a beach chair with rod in hand he seemed more interested in relaxing than actually catching anything so when the sound of line rapidly being unspooled from a reel was heard he jumped up and tightened his grip, clearly as surprised as he was excited. A small group gathered as he fought whatever was on the line for a few minutes before at last the flash of blue and red scales came into view. The tell tail sign of a Carvanha, a pokemon that was not native to this bay. Fiercely territorial they are dangerous in large numbers, or if they get caught on a hook. One is rarely a danger but because of their reputation having one on the loose would make people afraid to get in the water.
As the fisherman reeled it closer to shore the Carvanha launched itself from the water at the man. He dropped his poll as the pokemon latched onto it, snapping it like a twig moments later. The crowd stood back, giving the pokemon a wide berth as it flopped its say back towards the ocean. If it managed to vanish beneath the waves it might be a while before the waters of the bay were safe again.
The day was lovely and Nyx would not allow his failure to ruin it. Bleu returned to shore too and like one of her teammates, she didn't find anything either. While on the hunt though, the pretty little bow she wore around her shell had caught on to something and ripped. Bleu was devastated too. After taking out a new pretty bow and tying it around Bleu's shell, Nyx and his Pokémon began to play. They played hide and seek with a group of kids they came across on the shore, splashed around in the water some more and after being Tuckered out, they all rested for a bit.
The cries of an older gentleman reach them and Nyx was quick to get up, grabbing his bag and togepi. He ran in the direction of the cries with his Pokémon to find a group of people crowded around the same area. He pushed through the crowd, finding the man who attracted so much attention. He was utterly shocked, staring in one direction. Nyx stood by the man, looking in the same direction. Nyx too became utterly shocked when he saw a carvanha. A carvanha did not belong in the bay. Its true that they not bad Pokémon but they can be dangerous to those who don't know them. Carvanha are territorial, which means if he thinks of this bay as his home, things would not be pretty. If anyone dared to swim in the bay, they would most likely be attacked. I have to do something, he thought and before he could really think about the situation, he was commanding his Pokémon to fight.
"Bleu, jump in and use water gun!" He pointed at the opponent to let Bleu know where to go. Bleu kept her distance from the carvanha but she was still close enough to get a good shot. Water came bursting out her mouth in the direction of the carvanha.
The lone Carvanha had found himself on the end of a hook and while they tended to be timid on their own it was provoked. Now that it was enraged even a lone Carvanha could prove dangerous. It managed to flop its way back into the shallow waters of the bay before the Squirtle's water gun hit it. The attack wasn't very effective and the largest impact it has was psychological. The Carvanha swam rapidly back and forth, locking its eyes on the Squirtle. The pokemon launched itself out of the water and at the Squirtle with its jaws outstretched, gnashing its teeth. It had a wicked bite and it aimed to use it.
He didn't really want to hurt the Pokémon. Which is why he used water gun- the move proved to be more aggravating to another water type than anything else. His eyes were on the carvanha the entire time. He could see the anger on his face, the carvanha was not going to take this, he was going to fight back. The carvanha clamped it's mouth open and shut repeatedly and fast. He was moving toward Blue now, Nyx could hardly see. With Nyx not being able to see, the opponent was able to take a big chunk out of Bleu's arm, causing her to cry out in agony. "Bleu! My sweet baby!" He called out. Nyx was now angry. He clenched his fist before call his next move.
"Bleu, shake that carvanha off and use rapid spin!"
Bleu did her best but she would have to wait for the carvanha to release. When it finally did, Bleu stepped back a bit, retracting into her shell and spinning rapidly. She was coming at the carvanha pretty fast
When the Carvanha finally released the squirtle it only did so to try and get a tighter grip. The vicious pokemon kept focused on the it's opponent even as it splashed about in the shallow water. When the rapid spin came the Carvanha knew just what to do. Continue biting things, as per usual. As the Squirtle's attack hit the Carvanha's rough sandpaper like skin it opened its maw and latched onto the Squirtle's shell with a crunch as it spun. Like a rodeo rider on a tauros it managed to hold onto the rapidly spinning shell for a decent amount of time before losing its grip and flying through the air into the deeper water. That attack had hurt its jaw most of all but it still had plenty of bite left. It let out a piercing screech which reverberated through the crystal clear water before swimming towards the other pokemon again, renewing its attack with fervor.
He had a nervous feeling in his stomach. Bleu hit the carvanha pretty hard, he heard the clashing sound it made when she hit the carvanha's rough skin. We have him. He thought with confidence. He did not expect the carvanha to clamp on to Bleu shell. "Shake him off, Bleu!" He hollered. Bleu struggled too, she kept spinning and spinning until the Pokemon finally let go. "Get ready Bleu, this isn't over." He kept his eyes on the carvanha. Just for a second, it looked like he had given up. The carvanha still had a lot of fight in him.
"Looks like he's going to use bite. Bleu, I want you to dodge it and use hydro pump!" Bleu gave a quick nod and when the time came, she dodged the attack. When she began using hydro pump, Nyx quickly reached into his bag and pulled out a Pokéball. His chance of catching it was slim to nothing but it was a chance he was willing to take. He tighten his grip around the ball, ready to throw it any minute.
The Carvanha watched as it passed by the squirtle which narrowly dodged its attack. One eye narrowed at the squirtle as it flew past, the other eye focused on the crowd which was standing on the other side of it. As the squirtle unleashed a hydro pump the Carvanha was powerless to dodge as it lacked the ability to manoeuvre whilst in mid air. The pokemon went sailing across the beach and landed just in front of a bystander who was watching the fight unfold a bit too close. The man jumped backwards away from the Carvanha, luckily it had no interest in him. It leered at the Squirtle and began to gnash its teeth once more. All in all the water type move had once more proved to be rather ineffective. The enraged pokemon flopped and flailed across the warm sand as it made its way towards the Squirtle, thrashing about and sending sand flying in all directions as it approached. The pokemon had taken a few hits but it was far from done.
Nyx was almost satisfied with what he saw. Their attempt with hydro pump knocked the carvanha right out the water. And in the crowd. Nyx panicked, ready to throw his pokeball and catch this Pokémon. The thought of the Pokémon attacking someone scared him. This carvanha wanted nothing to do with the people in the crowd though. He began flipping and flopping Bleu's way. The Pokémon was upset with her, he wanted to take a shot at the blue Pokémon and he finally got that chance. The caravanha used leer, making Bleu lose all confidence she had. The poor squirtle began shivering and shaking like she saw something terrible. Nyx called her name, trying to get her to listen to him. Bleu didn't not snap out of it until the Carvanha was close enough to use rage.
The carvanha's rage knocked Bleu down and she stayed down for a second, trying to get herself together. When she finely did, Bleu looked back at Nyx and nodded her head as if giving him the OK to give her another command. "Bleu, use skull bash!" Nyx waited until his Pokemon used the move to throw the pokeball.
The Squirtles attack sent the flailing Caravaha tumbling back across the sand once more. Moments later the pokeball encapsulated it and dropped to the ground. It rolled violently across the sand for quite some time until it finally clicked. Had the pokemon been in the water the outcome likely would have been different but battling on land had exhausted it despite a few less than effective attacks on the Squirtles behalf. As the ball stopped moving some on in the crowd began to clap, then someone else. Before long the entire crowd was clapping and cheering. Life guards would hop on their pokemon and dive down to make sure there weren't anymore Carvanha lurking about just to be sure it was safe but Nyx had effectively removed the dangerous pokemon from the bay and restored a sense of security. As the crowd began to a reporter became visible in their midst. The kind of reporter who wore their camera and mics, a one woman camera crew. The red 'live' light was visible flashing on the side of the camera as she left the crowd and started walking towards Nyx, likely wanting an interview. It would seem his stunt had made the news.
