So..... what to do.
Getting the Crystal City from Yayli had been easy. A lot easier than Ryusuke had been expecting, and while he and Grovyle had gotten a few battles in under their respective belts before reaching the end of Route 1 the trainer had still expected it to take more than a single day to travel from the port town to their first destination. It had certainly taken far longer than that to get from Lilycove to anywhere else in Hoenn without using a vehicle or a Pokemon to fly you there, and most of his experiences in the other regions he'd visited had been fairly similar. Admittedly, part of the reason they'd gotten to the city so quickly was because of a message Ryusuke had gotten from an old acquaintance through his PokeNav to see what they had sent his way, but that had only brought up even more questions than answers - certainly more than he'd had before reaching the city.
Collecting Pokemon had never been a goal of Ryusuke's when he'd left home - to be entirely honest, becoming a trainer had only been a means to an end at the time. Yet, for some reason, even actively avoiding scenarios where Pokemon would end up in his care seemed to backfire. Grovyle and Charizard had been there from the start, that was a given, and while it had been with a fair bit of reluctance and with a rather ugly alternative, Aerodactyl had likewise been willingly captured on Ryusuke's part, as had Tentacruel. The others, though... looking back on things, the majority of Ryusuke's team had either been given to him or decided to tag along of their own free will. And now there was one more than familiar face added to that list in the form of a single particular Dragon, the ball now held in Ryusuke's hand as the teen sat on a rock to the side of the dirt path that most trainers taking Route 1 utilized.
Blonde hair reflecting a fair amount of sunlight and the young man's crimson red coat very much visible against the verdant green backdrop of the grassy fields, Ryusuke would simply sit and think as he continued to look at the orb in his gloved hands, the Dragon inside returning his gaze without blinking. Not a glare, as many unfamiliar with the species might assume, but an expression that the trainer recognize more as cautious curiosity. And recognize the Pokemon Ryusuke did - more than recognize. Yet, he knew it couldn't have possibly been the same one that he used to know. Lorraine had managed to fully evolve her Bagon into a Salamence - in remarkably short time, no less - as part of her bid to be recognized by the League as a Dragon expert in the hopes of being made a Professor. And last Ryusuke had checked, Pokemon, once evolved, couldn't revert back to their previous forms, with only the very special exception of Mega Evolution. A fact that not too many people knew, but that was neither here nor there.
The main question, really, was what to do now. The first thing that Ryusuke had done in arriving in Crystal City was to start investigating the Gym, but the new addition changed things. It was a commonly accepted fact that the further you got into a region, the tougher the Pokemon got - the same with anything, really, as plants and animals tended to get bigger the further you got from the shoreline. Leaving the Dragon was certainly an option - not releasing it, but rather just not training it. Ryusuke had a perfectly strong team, one that he trusted and worked well with. Yet, at the same time, to do that would feel like a slight against Lorraine, especially if this Bagon was the offspring of her Salamence. If, may some higher power forbid, Grovyle were to have kids, Ryusuke would make damn sure they went to a good home if given the option, and making a decision not in the Bagon's best interests, to ignore it for the sake of convenience, just felt wrong.
Speaking of which..... taking a moment to look up from the Pokeball and glance around, Ryusuke had to wonder where Grovyle had gotten to. The original point of leaving Crystal City and backtracking to Route 1 had been to get some exercise for the other Pokemon that hadn't gotten such a chance the first time off the ship. Or, alternatively, to get started with Bagon's training - granted, Grovyle knew how to take care of himself, but it didn't hurt to have the Grass type around as a safety net.
From the bushes to the side of the road emerged a Kricketune of average stature. Roughly three feet tall and about fifty pounds it wasn't terribly impressive as far as pokemon go but it did stand out on the empty path. The Pokemon walked along the path, disinterested with everything and everyone else on the road as it made its way towards some unknown destination at a leisurely pace. The Kricketune strolled straight past the trainer without so much of a passing glance. The bug pokemon seemed to be in its own little world as it marched about to its own self composed tune. It had a long road still ahead of it and nothing but time to get there.

Well, in the end, nothing was really going to change, regardless of how long Ryusuke just sat there thinking about his options. As ill informed and advised as his choices might have originally been the day he set out from home, there was still one lesson in there that the trainer had known from the very start - action was what brought change, not simply thought. At the end of the day it was only one more Pokemon placed in his care on top of several others that still needed a bit of training - Fletchling, Goober, Gastly, Frubbles, Mudkip and..... Murkrow? Okay, maybe not Murkrow. The bird was vain, sure, but deceivingly powerful and arguably one of his strongest Pokemon in her own way, if admittedly not in terms of brute strength. All Bagon did was add one more to that number, nothing more, and he'd had a certain amount of trust placed in him the moment the Dragon had been sent his way.
So, review. What did he know of the things? Generally speaking, close quarters fighters. Lorraine's had Ember, but without actually taking the time to check in with the Pokemon Center Ryusuke honestly wasn't sure what moves his knew yet. So, best option was to assume that any opponent it fought would try to get close, which meant avoiding enemies who liked to fight from a distance unless the environment gave them plenty of cover and opportunities to fight on preferable terms. Weak to Ice, Dragon and Fairy, although those were relatively rare types and only one of them was regularly found in temperate climates like the grassland around them - and in that case, Mudkip was another newer Pokemon that needed a fair bit of experience, and who could counter two of those very weaknesses. Worst case scenario, let Bagon get a few hits in and then nuke the opposition with Charizard or Grovyle. If he could find the Wood Gecko, at any rate. Speaking of.....
Glancing up at the movement of something passing by, Ryusuke's eyes would follow the Kricketune as it rather openly continued down the path regularly used by trainers. An odd choice as far as most wild Pokemon went as they tended to prefer the security that the tall grass offered, but hey, to each their own. In either case, though, this was the same as that Palpitoad from the first day - Ryusuke had no real interest in fighting Pokemon who weren't looking for a match. He knew full well he wouldn't be happy if people screwed with his day for rather selfish reasons, and with that thought in mind the trainer would return the Dragon's Pokeball to his belt, dusting off the back of his coat as he stood up.
The road wasn't likely to have too many strong Pokemon for the same reason the beach near Yayli wasn't - it was a regularly traveled path, and the older, more experienced wild Pokemon to have avoided capture wouldn't risk venturing out in the open to make themselves easy game for trainer looking to expand their teams. No, Ryusuke's best bet was to go off the beaten path looking for them - and more to the point, quite a few of those Pokemon tended to be either territorial or looking to strengthen themselves just as he was. No moral conflict there if both of them were looking for a match, and with that thought in mind and a drawn out stretching of his arm overhead Ryusuke would begin walking, moving directly off of the dirt path and deeper into the tall grassland to the side.
A lone tree rose form this section of the tall grass, at its base a flock of Pidgey were pecking at seeds on the ground. As the trainer approached they stopped to look at him but it was not his presence that sent them scattering to the wind. From a branch far up the three a wild Seedot dropped down, landing amidst the Pidgey. Those who did not immediately take wing at the sound of it's impact were soon chased off by the small but determined Pokemon. Upon noticing the trainer it blinked a few times but seemed more puzzled than frightened. Trainers were not a terribly common sight off the main road here. The Pokemon kept its eyes on the intruder as it stood its ground, no matter how the trainer moved the Seedot made sure that it was standing between the trainer and the tree. Sure, there were plenty of threes in the world. Many trees just like this one in fact, except this one was his.

And still no sign of Grovyle.
Obviously the Grass type wasn't going to be easy to find in the field if he didn't want to be, but Ryusuke still somewhat expected to be able to at least spot the reptile's leaflike plume bobbing over the grass somewhere ahead or off to the side. Then again, that was also assuming the Wood Gecko had remained on the route with Ryusuke at all and hadn't simply gone back to Crystal City, likely to just chill out at the Pokemon Center for most of the day until his human partner returned. It would be far from the first time that Grovyle had done such a thing, and that wasn't taking into account the one year that the Pokemon had simply struck out on his own. Long story short - dumped in Castelia City, only for the Pokemon to show up out of the blue another ten months after the fact in Hoenn.
On the note of old memories, though.... the further Ryusuke continued into the field, the more he began to get the feeling that he wasn't exactly alone out there. Probably to be expected as Pokemon were far more common than most people probably knew, but as the trainer was dwelling on the past it couldn't help but bring to mind his first day as a trainer. More specifically, his first encounter with a wild Pokemon outside of Hoenn, in an environment quite similar to this, as well as the scar he still had to show for it. Hand moving to one of the Pokeballs at his belt, Ryusuke didn't quite pull it off but instead simply let his hand rest on the orb, ready to use it at a moment's notice. Spotting a lone tree off ahead, the trainer would begin to move towards it, intending to make use of the clearing beneath to stop and get his bearings for a moment.
Almost the moment that Ryusuke stepped clear of the grass a flock of Pidgey would take flight, albeit not due to his own presence. Rather, the birds had seemed more attentive than afraid, and it had instead been the sudden appearance of a Seedot dropping out of the tree that had startled the Flying types off. The remaining birds, likewise, were chased off in short order, only for the Grass type to immediately take notice of the lone, remaining human. Much like the Pidgey, the Seedot gave no indication of fear but rather remained where it stood, simply staring the trainer down with Ryusuke likewise merely standing in place and watching it for a few moments. On beginning to move off to the side, however, the Grass type immediately stepped to match the trainer's own movements, an act that was repeated as Ryusuke attempted to correct his approach twice after the first.
"There's a fine line between self defense and bullying, you know." Ryusuke said after a few more seconds spent staring the small Pokemon down, his expression having shifted from one of relative apathy to annoyance. Preventing someone from reaching the tree, Ryusuke could understand. There weren't many of them around here, and Seedot needed them as food. But the Pidgey? Far as Ryusuke had been able to tell they were minding their own business, nothing that should've concerned the Seedot. Under normal circumstances this would've just prompted the trainer to turn around and try elsewhere, but bullies had always been a sore spot for the blonde - he'd never gotten along with them since grade school, and petty as it might have been this was more a matter of principle than anything else. If the Seedot wasn't going to back down, neither would he.
If Seedot could roll their eyes... the small brown Pokemon bobbed back and forth, not even dignifying the trainer's statement with a response. It didn't have to listen to anyone, least of all trainers who shouldn't be here in the first place. It stood its ground and glared at the trainer, not backing down. the Seedot didn't appreciate being told how to behave in it's own home.

Oh, that didn't go unnoticed. Ryusuke'd dealt with a far, far worse roommate growing up, and while the Seedot gave no outward response to the trainer's words the blonde more than recognized the attitude from the little Grass type. Grass type. Why did the Grass types always have the attitude problems? In hindsight, Ryusuke was more than grateful that he'd been on Grovyle's good side growing up, especially given that the thing had given this same kind of sass to the local wild Pokemon west of Lilycove.... and, in the process, gotten them both into more trouble than either was prepared to deal with over and over again. The Wood Gecko seemed to have mellowed out on the surface, but Ryusuke knew better - he'd just outgrown the age of audacity and settled for subtlety and more intelligent methods of fucking with peoples' heads. This Seedot, though, was clearly still in the first stage. Ryusuke'd already put up with enough of it growing up, and had only allowed Grovyle to get away with it because they both had their quirks and knew it. From a stranger like this, though? Nope. Not gonna fly.
"Alright, fine, pal. Screw you, too." Ryusuke muttered, beginning to pull off the Pokeball that his hand had been on before pausing for a moment. Charizard? No. This thing wasn't worth even a moment of the Fire type's time, nor of Heracross's. Mudkip and Bagon, on the other hand, were different stories, and really, this couldn't be better than anything else Ryusuke could've asked for. First stage evolution, defensive type, which left his Pokemon free to go on the offense and practice their moves a bit, the whole reason Ryusuke had gone back to Route 1 to begin with. Mudkip, though? Much as Ryusuke had confidence in the little amphibian, he didn't have that much. She was still new to the concept of battling, and with a type disadvantage on top of that it'd be cruel to simply throw her into a fight without a plan in advance. Bagon, though, was an entirely different story as far as typing went, and with slight shift to the side the trainer's hand would fall on a different orb instead, plucking it from his belt and simply pressing a button to open the capsule rather than tossing it ahead. Given how small the clearing was, there wouldn't be anywhere for the thrown orb to go but into the grass beyond.
"Sorry for the quick tutorial, but you're up." Ryusuke said, a flash of bright light fading as the diminutive dragon coalesced into being directly ahead of the human. A small thing, barely any bigger than the Seedot across from it, and for several long moments the reptile would simply stand in place, sniffing the air, looking around and giving no indication that it heard the trainer who unleashed it. Whatever plans that Ryusuke might have had for easing the Pokemon into battling, though, would almost immediately go out the window. Suddenly, unexpectedly, the Dragon type's eyes locked onto his opponent and the creature charged the Seedot with a battle cry that would have been comical due to the creature's ridiculous height were it not for the ferocity and the cinders spewing forth from the reptile's mouth at the Grass type, something that caught the trainer completely off guard.
Summary: Bagon sent out, charged Seedot head on with a blitzkrieg attack. Ember used.
The hard shelled pokemon hunkered down as the embers poured over it. Flames licked its shell and despite the fact that it was built to withstand the elements the high temperatures of the attack took their toll. Without leaving its defensive pose it began to rock and shiver. Around it grass was pulled up by its roots from some unseen force. The pokemon's nature power attack coursed through the landscape and took the form of of razor leaf as it whipped the blades of tall grass in a circle around it.
