What a wonderful day. The weather was fine and Nattousai felt driven to fish for a new Water Type Pokemon. He had a pretty stupendous team already he thought, after freshly catching some fairly strong types he wanted to try his hand at a Water Type, with a desire to have some Poison genetics in there as well. His hunting today would involve a date with a Fishing Rod and a Tentacool, or even a Magikarp will do. He wanted to evolve the Magikarp to a Gyrados and feel all cool and awesome with a full team afterwards. But a Tentacool would do just as nice to become a mighty Tentacruel; he specialized in training Poison Types of any variety. The Route was quite a bustling place for Trainers traveling to Pacu Island or the other isles. It may seem like a generic stop, but soaking it all in, it was such a pretty and breathtaking place.
The sea shimmered with splashes of sunlight along its luscious sapphire waves and housed all kinds of unique and exciting Pokemon, all with their own individual strengths and weaknesses, all with a story to tell. Nattousai was going to be a part of that story. He had his Swirlix out enjoying the sunlight while it bounced around, tongue whipped out licking up the sun rays and, well, licking the salty water to wet its palette. It didn't realize the ocean would taste so salty, and quickly coughed up the water it had dipped its tongue in. It looked at Nattousai with a stupor and made a rather unpleasant and flatulent noise. It wanted food, sweet food, but what else was new? It always wanted food.
Perhaps this Pokemon was a bad idea to send out with such hyperactive energy upon doing a patient activity of fishing. Nattousai pulled out a wrapped up disposable bowl of cupcakes and allowed the Pokemon to have at it. The Swirlix shoved its face in the bowl after it was placed on the sandy ground and devoured the food in seconds. Crumbs were then littered all over its fluffy face. It licked its lips and belched with pleasure. It then fell backwards from bloating and began to stare at its Trainer in a thankful daze signaling that he now had permission to commence the activity without it bumbling about scaring the Pokemon away. Though the Pokemon was still quite wired, it at least would sit still for a few moments.
"That's a good Swirlix. This shouldn't take long. The Pokemon I want today are pretty common I think anyway." Sitting in a purple colored beach chair, Nattousai reels back his rod and then thrusts the line into the sun kissed ocean allowing the bobble to sink into its bank. This could either be a very long day, or a real short one depending on if Nattousai gets the catches he pleased, or how large and impressive the Pokemon was on the other end of his line. It could also depend on how cooperative his Swirlix was going to be, he felt bad keeping it cooped up in its Poke' Ball, so he let it have some time in the sun, and so far, it was going to behave, especially after being fed; so he thinks. He stretches his arms and slinks back into his chair, he takes out a harmonica he had with him and begins to play it, performing the tune of the infamous Poke' Flute that his mother used to play for him as a child. He didn't have the flute anymore though, it had broken when he was rough housing with it outside, so he memorized the tune and played it on the harmonica often to keep it fresh in his mind. It never really worked to actually calm Pokemon though, or awakening any other feeling within them not giving the same effect as the flute. He liked to think it did though.

A slight tug on the line, and then not much of anything at all. As the line was reeled in there wasn't really a fight. More so a sense of weight on the other end. As the end of the line reached the surface a Clamperl came into view. It was clamped down tight, with only the outside of its shell visible. The shell opened just a bit and the Clamperl spit out the end of the line before retreating back into its shell one more. Not showing any sign of revealing itself any time soon.
There was only a few minutes that went by until a snag came upon the line; which was luckily for Swirlix who was not prone to waiting around too long. Nattousai jumped up and clasped his hands around the fishing rod with the Swirlix trying to sit up from its laying down position, but it was too bloated and falls back down with its tongue flopping out lazily. Its food was in the middle of being digested so it wasn't really that energized yet upon its meal, in a few moments it would be though no doubt. Nattousai reeled in the Pokemon on the other end of the line and out came a Clamperl landing gracefully onto the sand, but acted incredibly shy. The Pokemon remained in its tightly closed shell only coming up to reveal itself to spit out the line. Nattousai didn't really get a good look at the thing so closed up in its shell, but he had known about Clamperls for a while now, and it wasn't a Pokemon he thought he would be that great at training.
"Do not worry Clamperl, don't be afraid. You can go back into the sea if you wish, sorry to have bothered you, I don't want to take you away if you don't want to go friend." Nattousai gathers up his line and fixes it so it is straightened out for another nice toss into the ocean. The Swirlix rolls over near the Clamperl and looks at it interested in it and tries to lick its shiny shell with its oversized tongue. Nattousai stops him. "Swirlix...don't." Swirlix just about has the tip of its tongue on the Clamperl when Nattousai warns him off, and the Pokemon rolls back to Nattousai's side with a frown not getting a taste of the hiding Clamperl. "You're a very pretty and exquisite creature. Your shell glows with beauty. It'd be a shame to deny the sea your extravagance. Enjoy the depths below once more Clamperl, and shine bright in all you do down there for me." Nattousai takes a few steps back as does his Swirlix to allow the Clamperl some space to return to the sea.
Nattousai sits back into his lounge chair and with his head aimed straight at the sea, tosses in another line as it splashes underneath the waves of the bank. The Swirlix is standing in a lean against Nattousai's chair, as if using the chair to keep it balanced and held up. It was feeling better after all that eating, but still a little drowsy and in a food comatose of a sort. Another few more minutes and it'll be right as rain. Nattousai remains still keeping his fishing pole positioned perfectly in his hand, and his line angled at just the right spot. He was set for another perfect catch. The Clamperl could enjoy going back into its home beneath the surface, and Nattousai could continue enjoying his fishing activity uninterrupted, everyone wins. Was he picky? Or was he just uninterested at the moment? For a man who is a Gym Leader and that loves Poison Types one could bet he just wanted the right Pokemon for him.
The Clamperl eventually managed to roll its way back into the ocean where it sunk like a brick beneath the waves. Some time passed, and the next bite felt even less impressive than the first. The pokemon was not actually caught, rather it had caught the bait. As it was lifted from the water the Clauncher stubbornly clung to the bait with it's massive claw, refusing to let go even as it was exposed to the salty sea air. It dangled there awkwardly, staring at the trainer a bit angrily. Or perhaps it wasn't angry. It's hard to tell with Claunchers.
"My my, a Clauncher! You little fellas are hard to find. Well, you're no Tentacool, or a Magikarp...but I think you'll do fine." He was debating whether to go straight to battling or trying to talk with it to feel it out and see if being on his team was something it may enjoy. He eventually decided he would only talk with it briefly and attempt to persuade it only once to join him, he could tell it wasn't in the best of moods, and like the Marowak he had recently acquired, it may be too bitter to have a friendly connection with the Gym Leader. "Swirlix, say hello, introduce yourself." The Swirlix had recovered fully from its bloating and bounced over to the Clauncher with its tongue draping down. It started to lick the Water Type playfully and with no intention to harm it. It then made a gleeful noise saying hello and began bouncing circles around it in excitement. "Not the introduction I had in mind...but hey, at least you're being friendly." The Swirlix was just being its usual zany self pouring its energy out on the Clauncher wanting to play with the Pokemon very badly.
"Don't mind Swirlix Clauncher, it's just getting to know you. I can tell it to stop if it's too much. But my name is Nattousai, are you interested in the rest of the world beyond the sea? Me and Swirlix are traveling all over the place, and we'd love to have you along on our adventure!" Nattousai was being super enthusiastic and making his offer sound fulfilling and convincing. Water Pokemon loved the sea ofcourse, but some Pokemon also did in fact like adventure and going places, and some also did want to be caught, growing bored of the Wild and tired of the dangers. Nattousai would see what this one wanted, and if it was a battle it would start, it would be a battle it would get. If the Pokemon would try to run or flee, that would be a sure sign it wanted to stay in the Wild where it thrived, but Nattousai saw potential in this one, and a Pokemon that could grow to enjoy captivity and a life of adventure, Nattousai wanted it to experience that, whether it knew how thrilling a life like that could be or not, it would be shown the wonders of the world and given a personal tour by the Gym Leader and his companions to change its mind and feed its curiosity.
"So consider it. Wouldn't you like to see what lies beyond the ocean depths?" The Swirlix kept bouncing all over the place not trying to invade the Clauncher's space too much, but it was still hovering along its radius. Now that it was full of energy again, it just wanted to keep going and couldn't stop, it loved the outdoors that was obvious and would keep relishing in the fresh air for as long as it could. The sandy beach and the lulling waves mixed with the salty smelling air gave it a warm feeling inside, and it basked in the delight of it all. The Clauncher was probably used to this environment, and thus was nothing special, but to the Swirlix it was a paradise and a nice change from the bushy crossroads where it once dwelled. It certainly was liking going on these adventures and all this traveling with Nattousai so far, and believed the Clauncher would only like it as well. It went onward with its moving around killing time until the Clauncher would make up its mind to either join Nattousai and his team or remain bitter and prep for a fight.
This particular Clauncher was easily annoyed, quick to judge and lacked imagination. It was not an old pokemon but it was set in its ways none the less. The Swirlix's incessant bouncing gradually bothered the Clauncher more and more until it finally let go of the bait and dropped to the ground, waving its gun like claw around wildly as if it was daring the Swirlix to keep trying it's patience. It just wanted to be left alone and was already regretting its choice to ride the line all the way up to the surface. It much prefered mud, water and solitude to land, air and the incarnation of pure unbridled energy that was the Swirlix. It's trainer was also found to be bothersome, though more so by association with the bouncing fuzz ball than any of his own actions.
"Ah yes...another Wild Pokemon that just isn't having it with me." Nattousai really, and truly was terrible at having conversations with Pokemon. He was just not a likable fellow as it were, and he did try very hard to be nice, but there was something about persuasion and charm that he just didn't have. There was no school or anything that taught you how to be a better smooth talker or a more compassionate or convincing person, there just wasn't. He had to build those skills himself, and for someone who was naturally a clever and sarcastic person such an idea just felt like an unobtainable concept. He liked to try, he liked to believe he was capable at allowing other Pokemon to see his more vulnerable and caring side, but often times those Pokemon just didn't care, and they wanted to be left alone and move on somewhere else. He could also very well just blame his Swirlix's obscene demeanor this time around for angering the Clauncher and not be so hard on himself and his chatter. Having Swirlix out maybe wasn't the best idea after all.
"I am real sorry Clauncher. But cut my Swirlix a break please, it didn't mean to offend." Nattousai wanted to catch this Pokemon, he was set on its capture incessantly, but if it was going to fault him for having a hyperactive lovable Pokemon, he felt it pointless to keep bothering with it. He had too many Pokemon already that were a pain to train and get along with him, he wasn't about to add another to the list. He was going to suck it up, and allow the Wild Pokemon to leave if it so desired this time. "Swirlix come sit over here with me will you?" The Swirlix smiles and happily bounces over to Nattousai planting itself next to him in a flop. The Swirlix appreciated Nattousai as its Trainer, but it wouldn't sit still for long. "Clauncher...I am not going to make you come with us. If the sea is your favored place, then you are welcome to stay there. But I would have loved to have you tag along. We will just sit here and go about our business, and if you want to go back...I guess we gotta let you." Nattousai readjusted his fishing rod and once more smoothed out his line taking a seat in his chair. He would keep fishing and let the Clauncher do what it wanted, whether that means sticking around or jumping back into the sea, Nattousai was going to let it make its own choice.
"Leave that Clauncher alone Swirlix, it wants its peace and quiet. So let's just keep to our activity and give it its space." The Swirlix frowned looking over at the Clauncher holding back with all it could to stop itself from playing with it, but eventually it gave up the attempt and began bouncing around Nattousai instead. "Swirlix, eyes to the sea. Keep a lookout for any bubbling under the water's surface or a shadow beneath the waves. Let's keep fishing." Swirlix's beady pink eyes bulged locking on to the sea scouting for incoming Pokemon as Nattousai throws out his line again and waits for another catch. The Clauncher would either be gone by then or stay put, and if it stayed, Nattousai wouldn't hesitate to pull the line back in and keep working at getting to know it. But presently, he didn't think it likely, and just continued what he was doing, with the Swirlix standing watch by his side for the next big catch and hopefully, a Pokemon that actually wouldn't mind being caught.
The Clauncher returned to the sea as soon as it was left alone. There were many pokemon in the world who would love to travel and see the sights but some were clearly set in their ways. Especially those who enjoyed dwelling in the muck at the bottom of the sea. Of course not every pokemon was that content with their lives. Particularly those that were at the bottom of the food chain. A tug on the line signaled a bite and a short fight resulted in a rather humdrum run of the mill Magikarp being brought to the surface. The pokemon was widely believed to be useless, but it's evolution was also one of the most sought after pokemon in all the region, provided the trainer could properly raise the Magikarp before evolving it. Gyarados were much less docile than their pre-evolution counterparts and therefore more difficult to train.
A rushed evolution is the folly of many a trainer. Of course, that was all baseless speculation. These pokemon couldn't defend themselves, from pokemon or trainers. A lot of work, but a good payoff should the trainer be interested.
The Clauncher was left to dwell back inside its home, and Nattousai wasn't too heartbroken about it. He understood some Pokemon were just better off to their homes and natural surroundings. Some just fair better on their own and don't do so well with a Trainer forcing a capture on them. The Gym Leader wasn't all that mean, he knew Pokemon had feelings too just like humans, and had desires and emotions that lead them to their indifferent personalities and talents. The Clauncher was one of those select few Pokemon whom preferred a life of solitude over a Trainer and a journey. After it lingered back into the ocean without even a second thought of Nattousai's offer, Nattousai sent out his line again with his Swirlix jumping up and down alerting him of a Pokemon nearby it could see underneath the water's edge. Seconds after he sent out his bauble once more, he got a quick bite, this one was much easier to reel in too. He wound up his rod, and pulled the new catch onto shore. In a pathetic flopping fit, a Magikarp slithers onto land. Nattousai was all too familiar with these fish Pokemon; a useless type that is only really useful upon evolution. Though in its first form it proves a pointless possession, once it grows into a towering Gyrados it transforms into a worthy and domineering beast.
Nattousai saw the potential in this little floppy fish, despite being apparently a stuff of legends in lore, and ultimately showing to be much less than believed. He had faith in this Pokemon that it would be a rewarding team member as time went on, and the Gym Leader would be lying to himself if he didn't admit that he had wanted a Gyrados since he was very little, only ever dreaming of actually being able to handle and train one properly. Now that he was a Gym Leader, he felt he had earned that right. "Swirlix...we have a winner. I mean, I think I could just kinda throw a Poke' Ball at it right now and it would be an automatic capture, I don't even think it would understand what we say to it if we try and sway it to our party. Magikarp, you seem a much nicer sort than the other creature, we can make you big and strong, wanna come with us?" Swirlix repeated Nattousai's words to it after bouncing over to the fish in a lovable hop. The two would try this simple route of capture first, then secure the catch later whether this method was going to work this time or not. It hasn't worked as of yet, but this Pokemon appeared much more willing to join this time, or so Nattousai thought.
"Just imagine...no more swimming around with all those dangerous scary Pokemon in the ocean trying to hurt you and get all up in your space. No, instead, a life of luxury and smooth sailing with me and my friends. Swirlix here being one of them, and he has taken quite the liking to you already." Nattousai's Swirlix tried to imitate the Magikarp's flopping about, in a friendly way ofcourse, to invite friendship. But again, the Magikarp may be completely oblivious to everything Nattousai and Swirlix were trying to do in persuading it to join up with them and it could all just be a big waste of time communication wise. The duo attempted the conversational aspect of this capture anyway, and patiently awaited the Magikarp's response to their swooning. It was the Magikarp after all that would give the team an idea of how much effort the two really had to give in order to win its affections; if any at all.
As far as Magikarp went one should never expect too much. This pokemon however was prodigy among Magikarp. Mostly because it managed to survive long enough to get itself caught. Potentially caught at least. It continued to flop about, it's mouth opening and closing as it repeatedly exclaimed karp. Clearly it was not an effective communicator but it seemed to have some intelligence in its crazy eyes. Plus it was flopping towards the trainer and not towards the sea. Of course, that might just because flopping is a terrible way to travel but the trainer could make of it what he would. The pokemon was clearly excited as it flopped alongside the Swirlix. No one had ever bothered to talk to it before. It had been caught a few times but they always just tossed it back. Other pokemon never did anything but bully and try to eat it. The fact that neither of those things were currently happening was a refreshing change of pace.
"I guess we got our answer!" The Magikarp's odd gesture was all Nattousai needed to make his next move. He takes out a Poke' Ball while the Swirlix hops in sync with the Magikarp's flopping with the fish distracted enough and calm enough to be around the Trainer and his hopping cotton candy creature. He enlarges the Poke' Ball within his hand, tosses it up and down excitedly juggling it a bit, and then flicks it at the Magikarp with the Swirlix just out of the way enough for Nattousai to secure the capture. If this boded well, it would be Nattousai's very first Water Pokemon he would ever acquire, and a Pokemon that screamed to be trained, a Pokemon that actually wanted to join Nattousai for once, and wanted to become stronger. Such cooperation already was a great sign, and the Gym Leader would not find too much trouble handling it once it became a Gyrados. Though its rage will grow, it wouldn't be so difficult to quell it if it enjoyed Nattousai as a Magikarp first. The Swirlix danced around the Poke' Ball as it snatched up the Magikarp inside it and eyed the object while it rolled for the catch.
"This one should be right in the bag." He wasn't worrying about his catch this time, he was hopeful that he could capture the fish without any fuss. He also saved his entire team the headache and the exhaustion of another battle. He was kinda glad he didn't settle on the Clauncher, this Magikarp was a much better choice. Though not much now, it would be a titan later. "Thanks for being a good sport in all this Swirlix. I know fishing isn't the funnest activity out there, but you've been a real champ throughout." Swirlix smiled at his Trainer's statement and then jumped in his arms in a high arc snuggling his chest in thanks. It then proceeded to puke on his neck in a small puddle of rainbow colored vomit from its excitement and to show his love for him in the most sincere but messy way. Nattousai forgave his little Swirlix for its spit up, and patted him on the head. He would clean it later. He stretched his neck passed his Swirlix as it proceeded to cuddle to gaze at the ball while it rolled on the sand, keeping an eye on the catch to come.
The ball rocked for a bit, perhaps more for ceremony than anything else. The pokemon seemed willing to go, with almost no encouragement required. Not to mention it couldn't have fought back much if it had tried. It locked after only a few tilts, clicking to let the trainer know it was done. The pokemon seemed eager, or perhaps just spastic. Magikarps were pretty difficult to read.
"That about wraps things up Swirlix. I think we're good here now. Too bad about that Clauncher, but this Magikarp more than makes up for it. Let's call it a day." Swirlix bounces once in reply to Nattousai, agreeing with him. It was trying its best to soak in all this knowledge about fishing and such, finding the activity time consuming, yes, but also tedious and quite strange. It wouldn't want to be present with Nattousai for the activity again it doesn't think, it didn't like being bored. Nattousai gathered his things including his fishing rod and lawn chair, compartmentalized them and folded up his umbrella, and managed to shove them all into his backpack and what he couldn't fit he slung over his shoulder or carried in his hands. "Come along Swirlix, what a beautiful note to end the day on, and such a lovely place." Lastly, he grabs the Poke' Ball of the caught Magikarp and starts heading to the direction to leave the Route and get back to Dizhen City, he stops and turns around to enjoy the view and the serenity of the ocean once more, closing his eyes and vegetating a moment before deciding to leave, and after he gets his one last good fill of the area, he smiles, feeling fulfilled, and walks away from the shore.
The Swirlix hops beside his much loved Trainer looking forward to the next big adventure. With his first Water type nabbed, Nattousai looks to the future in how to incorporate his new Pokemon into his training regime, and whom to mix and match it with for an optimal battling strategy. He had a plethora of different Pokemon with him now, and a full party. He would see to it that he would match up the correct Pokemon together and put others that don't quite fit his current needs into the box, and take them out when he is in need of their assistance. He had choices now, strategies, plans, and it was all so exciting. The more Pokemon he acquired, the more busy he would be. He would do his best to see that each one gets attention and training equally, that way he would have a bigger foundation of loyal and powerful companions at his disposal for any situation. They all had their own unique quirks that was certain, and the trick was to find the right time to use the right quirk in the right place. It wasn't rocket science, but it was an art....an art not to be taken lightly. Nattousai Fang, Gym Leader, Trainer, and soon....veteran of the Pokemon world.
