She felt the wind in her hair as it stormed outside of the lab. The rain kept falling, pooling puddles of water on the ground. The umbrella she had seemed to keep most of the rain off of her, but there were flecks of drizzle clinging to her exposed back. Her Arbok tattoo looked like it was sweating from the beads of rain that clung to her. She walked with a purpose, her long legs making elaborate steps. She detested heels, so the clomp of her military boots echoed on the pavement underneath her. Getting under the roof of the laboratory, just outside the doors, she folded in her umbrella and shook off the excess water from it before wrapping it and putting it back in the backpack slung over her shoulder.
Entering the lab, she kept her demeanor cool. She was not here to intimidate anyone, she was here on business. None the less, she kept her poise like the queen she was. She had to keep reminding herself of being less intimidating as the woman in black walked briskly to the front desk where people were waiting in line. If it was one thing she was, she was patient. Let the others make their choices, and note them for the future should she come across them again in her travels. Her mind drifted to her time in Team Rocket... would these people have criminals on their file or would there be a place here where she could run to start her career anew? After a trainer or two, it was finally her turn.
"Hello. My name is Nora Usher. I'm here to choose a Pokemon. I know I'm older, but I came to the island under pressed circumstances and I don't have a Pokemon of my own anymore. Could you please help me out on my journey?"

Kitty shuffled some papers around. Pokeballs in, new papers, name date, age, contacts. Pokeballs out, choice, stamp, repeat. She was on her way to becoming the next official Professor of the Yayli Town lab and she had all of this down to a science. She was the lab executive and boy had she earned that position. The woman was able to get a trainer a new Pokemon in under five minutes while having all of the correct paperwork filled out perfectly. She had originally worked at the Crystal city lab when she was just starting out as an intern but after years of proving her worth they wanted her to be executive. The only catch was the lab in Crystal already had two lab executives meaning she was getting shipped off to a different system.
The change had been hard at first. There were so many random Pokemon being caught and left with the lab to give away and they never ordered the League approved starters meaning that giving out choices for trainers was completely random. Still though, Kitty had gotten the hang of it and was pumping out new trainers all over the place. The next girl that came up threw the woman off of her rhythm.
The soon-to-be trainer was dressed in all black and quite a bit older than the teenagers that came wandering through. Still, she was required to give out Pokemon to anyone who qualified. "Hello Ms. Usher. Please fill out the top part of this form while I prepare your options." Kitty pushed the blank paper to the other woman and began to dig into the desk drawer where her missing secretary kept all of the "cute and adorable" choices. Three Pokeballs found their way into her hand as she set each of them on the desk.
"For you today, I present you with a Skiddo. This Skiddo is quite a lovely creature, he is very timid and makes for a great companion. Second there is this intelligent Houndour. He is the smartest of his kind and if you want someone who knows how the world works, he should be your choice. Lastly I have," Kitty's voice faltered as she stared at the small yellow star on the back of the third Pokeball. "Um, well, I have a Purrloin for you. This Pokemon is a special one, She was rescued from a horrible trainer and lost her front leg. She is strong though and quite defiant. If you wish to interact with these choices, please, feel free to do so."
She considered them all, knowing that she would be with different advantages with each of them. Looking at the balls intently, she took the Skiddo first and unballed him from his prison. Seeing the skittish Pokemon out in the open, she knelt down close to it and pet its head gently. The Pokemon kept shying away from her before eventually making a noise and backing up several steps. The Pokemon began to cry which Nora looked surprisingly at.
"There, there. It's okay. I won't take you away."
Nora balled the Skiddo back up before returning the ball to Kitty. She took the next ball with the Houndour. She unballed the Houndour and got a good look at him. He barked happily and wagged his tail. Nora knelt down again to meet the Pokemon at his level and held out her hand to him for him to get a good sniff. The Houndour sniffed her hand and took her sleeve playfully with a growl. The Pokemon smiled as he played with her jacket, and she gently pulled away from the Pokemon.
"Tempting, but... allow me to see the Purrloin. She sounds like quite a survivor."
Balling up the Houndour, she returned the ball to Kitty before taking the Purrloin ball. She noted the star on the ball and curiously examined it before opening it. The Pokemon sat there with several scars on its body, missing it's leg as noted before. The Pokemon stood straight, the hair on it's coat raising in nervousness. Nora quickly dropped to her knee to examine the Purrloin, holding her hand out to the Pokemon.
The Purrloin narrowed it's eyes and lashed its claws out at Nora's hand. She quickly rushed it back, dodging the swipe, but the cat balanced perfectly on its hind legs to make up for the lost front leg.
"Well, aren't you a strong one."
The Purrloin hissed defiantly at Nora, but Nora kept her ground. She reached out again so that the cat could sniff her out and decide for herself if she wanted to go with Nora. It took about a minute for the cat to decide that the trainer wasn't going to hit her or abuse her, so she quietly walked up to Nora's held out hand and nuzzled it nervously. Nora decided that the time was right to start scratching her ears, and the two made bonds. Purrloin leaned her head in so that Nora could get the right spot on her scritching.
Nora kept her distance to make sure the cat wasn't going to scratch at her again, but Nora let out a rare smile as the Purrloin pawed at her hand while staying seated on her hind legs.
"Is there any way to get her a prosthetic leg? Not having her front leg must get in the way of her movement a little. I'm going to be using her for mainly combat, and I'm not sure she wants to live that kind of lifestyle after what happened to her."
The new trainer released each Pokemon one at a time, taking time to examine them all and understand them a little better. Kitty barely paid attention to what was happening and instead focused on her paperwork. It was only when the trainer asked her a question about the Purrloin that she was forced back into reality. She was asking about a prosthetic limb for the cat.
Kitty cleared her throat, "Well currently we don't have anything. A few of our interns were working on a project but have yet to get very far." The lab worker stood and walked around to where the Pokemon was standing. "Her previous trainer worked her too hard with battling and in a fight with a stronger Pokemon. It hardly effects her ability to fight. Let me show you." The woman pulled out one of her personal balls and released a Azumarill. The water type looked eagerly to her trainer, waiting for the reason as to why she was out.
"The only move that she will really struggle with is Fake out because it uses both front paws. But everything else she can do easily." Kitty started out before stepping back to where the new trainer was sitting. "For example, Purrloin, use Slash." The purple cat looked at her before nodding and walking back a few paces. She ran forward before jumping into the air, her only paw outstretched and glowing white. The cat struck the Azumarill once before the Purrloin landed her back paws on the Pokemon to get in another good slash before bouncing back and landing daintily on her back paws. "We of course will still work on getting that fake limb made but if you want, you can take her in her current state or one of the other options."
Nora seemed to have decided, seeing the cat's willingness to fight. She held out her arms, waiting for the Purrloin to come for some love and attention. The Purrloin paused a moment, looking at Nora strangely before walking closer to her. She slowly picked up the Purrloin and cradled it in her arms, scratching his ears as she held the Purrloin close to her chest. "I'll take him. I promise I'll be firm, but not overbearing. People will tend to underestimate him because of his missing limb, so if he's used to walking that way, I think I'll keep him as is and give him exercises to move faster."
The Purrloin purred from the attention, a strange expression on his face. It was as if he hadn't got such loving attention in a long time and didn't know how to react to such love. He finally resigned to the attention and rested his head against her chest with it's eyes closed, getting his ears scritched with enjoyment rather than confusion.
"I think I'll name you Sneak. You're still capable of stealth and speed, and that's the main strategy I'll use for you. Do you like that name?"
Sneak's purring got louder as he raised his head from her chest and looked her in the eyes. It was a knowing look despite being pleased, his eyes narrowed and a big grin covering his maw.
"Sneak it is, then. I hope to be great partners with you in the future. We will have to get more partners to train up with, but you will be the forefront of my new life. How does that sound? Would you like to conquer the world?"
"Loooooooin!"
For the first time in a long time, Shade had a look of happiness on his face. All the aggression he had for the world would be solved if he could just be on the top of the mountain. He licked Nora's face as she giggled and smiled.
Nora's mind thought back to Giovanni and his Persian. Shade would be the equivalent to her mighty reign. She wouldn't spoil him rotten without some tough training, but the cat would come to enjoy his union with his trainer, at least in Nora's mind. She put Shade down and smiled at Kitty, wondering if there was anything else she needed to do to take this fine feline home.
"Is there any paperwork that needs to be done? I can't wait to get on the road with him."
